A HORRIFIED mum has been keeping a 24/7 guard on her severely disabled daughter in the care home where a fellow patient was raped and impregnated while in a coma.
Karina Cesina, 44, whose daughter Jazzmyne Morris has brain damage, taped a note on her door stating “no male staff”, plans to install CCTV cameras in her room and vows not to leave her side until the rapist is caught.
Sun Online can also reveal how staff at Hacienda Healthcare in Phoenix, Arizona have been receiving death threats as anger grows and families demand to know how the abuse and pregnancy could have gone unnoticed.
Court records obtained by Sun Online show the 29-year-old, who is in a vegetated state due to severe brain damage, had a “firm belly” and was given a full medical including a “well woman” check less than nine months before her baby was born – but staff still failed to spot she was pregnant.
Meanwhile the devastated relatives of the victim, who are now looking after the baby, said they were too upset to comment on the horrifying situation when approached by Sun Online.
The victim, who cannot be identified, shocked caregivers when she began groaning in pain and gave birth to a baby on December 29.
She nearly died during the difficult labour and is currently recovering in a different hospital.
Horrified Karina, whose severely disabled daughter has been living in the same facility since November 2017, said she first heard about the disturbing incident on TV and blasted care home bosses for how they handled the situation.
She revealed she had experienced many issues with the “negligent” care home – including terrible food and staff walking in and out while her daughter was taking a shower – even when she had requested privacy.
She has now started a gofundme page to try and raise enough money to move her “petrified” daughter to a different care home.
“When I first saw what had happened I was sick – and to be honest I’m still feeling sick,” she told Sun Online.
“My stomach has been in knots since I first found out about this – it’s absolutely shocking.
“My daughter is terrified. She has many health issues but she is cognitive and she understands.
“I had to explain to what happened and her eyes just got really big, she was scared. We’re all petrified.
“I asked her if she had been abused and she said no, but many of the patients here are completely non verbal so who knows how many more have been abused.
“We put a note on the door for no guys to come into our room until we get this case settled and find out who this perpetrator is, which I feel bad for because I know there’s a lot more good guys than bad guys out there but I have to protect my daughter.
“I’ve quit my job and I pretty much spend 24/7 here – usually I sleep in the bed with her.
“We had several issues with the care home. It started three or four months after she moved here – and suddenly things started going downhill. Food was terrible, therapy was not good, staff members were quitting left and right.
“We’ve had privacy issue because she goes and showers by herself and she’s vulnerable in her chair and staff just kind of walk in and out and that’s private time. You need to keep the doors closed and keep her dignity and privacy intact.
“I’m aware of other families who have had the same issue but what’s so wrong is it takes something horrible like this to happen for things to change and it shouldn’t be like that.”
Karina says she cannot rest until the rapist is found – and issued a stark plea to the “sick” perpetrator to turn himself in.
“Quit wasting millions of taxpayers dollars and turn yourself in,” she said.
“Your actions were sick. I don’t know what was going on in his mind to make him think it’s okay to do that to anybody.
“None of us can rest until he is found and brought to justice.
“I know the victim’s family are horrified, they’re traumatized. I can’t imagine what they are going through.
“I know that they said that they will accept the baby into a loving family, which is great.
“But when that baby gets older and he starts learning the truth it’s going to be hard for that baby boy to accept who he is and where he came from.
“We can’t rest until this guy and this place is held accountable. We’re looking for another facility I need to start feeling safe and my daughter needs to start feeling safe. She doesn’t want to be here. It’s terrifying.”
She hit out at negligent management at the care home – and branded the former CEO Bill Timmons, who quit his job last week, “a real jerk”.
Karina was also angry didn’t receive a letter from care home bosses until January 8th, 10 days after the victim had given birth.
In the letter dated January 4th, care home bosses called the incident “deeply disturbing” and said they were taking “every precaution necessary” to protect patients.
“It took them too long to respond, I didn’t receive that letter until January 8th and it was even addressed to me it was in an envelope with my daughter’s name on it,” she said.
“I definitely believe that there’s been negligence and bad management.
“I’ve had two grievances with this place because the food was so bad my daughter’s weight went down to 55 pounds. It’s hard for her to chew and they send burnt foods that’s like rubber.
“So I requested a meeting with the CEO and he was a real jerk. He was not very pleasant. He was very mechanical and he wasn’t very receptive.
“I didn’t even really get a chance to talk to him. He did all the talking.”
Karina also told how staff morale at the care home was very low, with female staff working double shifts to cover for the male staff.
They’ve also received death threats as anger at the situation boils over.
“Everyone is mortified and the staff can’t believe this happened,” she said. “They’ve been receiving death threats – that’s why there’s all these cops walking around.
“People are overworked – all the women are picking up the slack until we can figure out who did this.
“I know the male staff have been DNA tested but we don’t know if family members are being tested – or even other patients – as there are able-bodied patients in the unit.
“At the moment all the men are suspects – everyone who walks past I’m thinking ‘Was it him?’ which is awful but that’s how it’s going to be until we find this guy.”
Cops have now been drafted in to protect the staff following the threats.
Phoenix Police Department confirmed that staff had received threats but said the officers on the scene were off-duty cops who had been hired as security.
Sgt Tommy Thompson told Sun Online: “There have been threats to the facility.
“So far, there has been enough to follow up on the threats, but I believe they have hired off-duty security.”
The victim, who has been at the care home since she was three after she was involved in a near-drowning, is a member of the San Carlos Apache tribe.
Her mother is her legally appointed guardian and makes the 200 mile round-trip from the San Carlo reservation once or twice a month, according to records.
Court papers from the victim’s guardianship hearings filed at the Superior Court of Arizona reveal the severity of her disabilities.
She is quadriplegic, brain damaged and suffers regular seizures.

At the time she was raped she had a feeding tube in her belly, a breathing tube and was suffering bouts of recurrent pneumonia.
A full medical check took place on April 16, 2018, less than nine months before she gave birth, where medical staff noted she had a “firm belly” and carried out a “well woman” check but failed to notice she was pregnant.
