A MAJOR US meat producer has recalled more than 36,000lbs of chicken nuggets amid fears they are contaminated with rubber.

Tyson Foods is recalling the product because they could contain “extraneaous materials”, or more specifically blue rubber, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said.

It added there were a number of consumer complaints about the five-pound packages of Tyson Fully Cooked Panko Chicken Nuggets, which is a popular frozen food product in the US.

Consumers who bought the products in Arizona, California, Illinois, New Jersey and Utah are urged to throw away or return the frozen food packages.

There have been no confirmed reports of consumers experiencing a negative reaction after consuming the products, but individuals who are concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

The FSIS said: “The panko chicken nugget items were produced on 26 November, 2018 … The products subject to recall bear establishment number ‘P-13556’ inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.”

Consumers have been told to throw away or return any chicken nugget packages that fit this description.

Tyson Foods announced they were voluntarily recalling 36, 420lbs of product.

They said: “A small number of consumers contacted the company to say they had found small pieces of soft, blue rubber in the nuggets, prompting the company to issue the recall.

“Though the pieces have been found in a very small number of packages, no injuries have been reported with this recall; however, out of an abundance of caution, the company is recalling 36,420 pounds of product.

“Consumers should know that the product was shipped to club store distribution centers in Arizona, California, Illinois, New Jersey and Utah.”
